History

For over 300 years the Ochsen has stood for the enjoyment of best quality meat in the hospitable surroundings of the Gasthaus zum Ochsen in Arlesheim near Basel.
We can look back with pleasure and pride at over 100 years of our family history.

Throughout the building one is confronted with reminders of the past which arouse nostalgia in the elderly and astonishment in the young.  Old photographs, prints and oil paintings as well as antiquated butcher’s implements evoke early times and harmonize perfectly with modern comforts.

The strong association with the butcher’s trade and meat specialities did not occur by chance.  Our earliest ancestors settled in Arlesheim in 1899 and the family has owned the Ochsen and the leading regional butcher’s business since 1923.  The combination of the butcher’s skills and the Gasthof zum Ochsen has always been an unbeatable team.

And so it is today – Christoph and Barbara Jenzer maintains a delicate balancing act between hotel, butcher’s shop and delicatessen with dedication and enthusiasm.  They are energetically supported by hotel managerin Sibylle Böhler and an enthusiastic and motivated team.

The proximity to Basel, the museum city on the trinational border with the open countryside on its doorstep, make Arlesheim an endearing and attractive place.  The motorway junction is only 3 km away and within 3 minutes you can walk to the Ermitage nature reserve, one of the most beautiful wellness parks that nature has ever created.  You have the choice between the bustling city and the rural idyll.

It is our aim to make the time you spend with us as enjoyable and comfortable as possible, with sincere hospitality and excellent food.
