Excursion Tips
Walk along the Birs
The 75 km long tributary of the Rhine, which rises in the Jura and ends in the Rhine in Basel, attracts many walkers.
You can adjust the length of your excursion according to your mood and start the way back on the other side of the bank. For nature lovers, it is worthwhile to enjoy the flora and fauna of the «Reinacherheide» nature reserve directly on the Birs between Arlesheim and Reinach.
Walk through the Ermitage
The Ermitage in Arlesheim is right on our doorstep and, with an area of around 40 hectares, is the largest English landscape garden in Switzerland. It was opened in 1785 as "Solitude romantique près d’Arlesheim" and is now a nature reserve and place of power. The Ermitage attracts many visitors, walkers and nature lovers every year, who enjoy the special flair of the grottos, ponds and the hermitage. A walk is a special experience at all times of the day and year. Let yourself be enchanted by this place of power!
Walk through the vineyard «Schlossberg»
For a short but nice walk, we recommend the Arlesheim vineyard with its elevated position, it offers a wonderful view of the whole of Arlesheim.
Hike to the «Gempenturm» tower
The over 120-year-old tower «Gempenturm» on the Gempenplateau has 5 floors, is 28 meters high and made of steel. The breathtaking view at 759 meters extends over the Basel area, Alsace and the Vosges in France to the Black Forest in Germany.
After a hike on the Gempen, you can stop off at the Gempenturm restaurant and strengthen yourself.
Getting there
On foot: Beautiful, signposted hiking trails lead through the Ermitage to the Gempen.
By car / public transport: The Gempenturm can also be reached by car. With public transport, you have to take tram No. 10 for two stops to the station in Dornach and then take bus No. 67 in the direction of Seewen to Gempen Dorf. From there it's a 15-minute walk to the Gempenturm.
