The Arlesheim cathedral with the Silbermann organ

A stone's throw from our hotel is the Arlesheim Cathedral from 1681 in a beautiful Baroque style with its world-famous Silbermann organ.

The organ is the last Silbermann organ in Switzerland which is almost maintained original.

The Basel cathedral chapter (head of a bishop's church) settled in Arlesheim in 1678 and had to have an appropriate structural infrastructure as quickly as possible. Thus, from 1679–1681, the cathedral was built by the architect Franz Demess and the associated canon houses by Franz and Karl Engel. The bells The bells rang for the first time in 1682. The early baroque architectural style of the cathedral was strict, simple and without major decorations. After only 80 years a lot had to be renovated. Inside and outside the cathedral was renovated in the late baroque style.

The cathedral has shaped the appearance of Arlesheim for over 300 years. Catholic services and concerts take place regularly.

Our hint: take a break on a bench on the cathedral square (Domplatz) and enjoy the imposing view of the cathedral.
